Tammy Leung

Visiting Scientist

I am a Postdoc at TU Braunschweig within the Winkler Lab building microsystems for life sciences. I am originally from the United States where I studied Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Davis. There I gained an interest with electronics, particularly flexible electronics after a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Summer Internship at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. This then led me to pursue a Master’s Degree in Materials Engineering where I focused on microfabrication techniques. I then moved to Spain where I obtained my PhD in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering allowed me to develop biodegradable electronics using additive manufacturing techniques.

I've always had a fascination with bioelectronics and their applications but never had the opportunity to work in this field. I previously heard about the Maoz Lab and his world class research by word of mouth and through various journal articles but was truly impressed with his excitement and inviting demeanor upon first meeting him. His drive is what drew me to wanting to perform research within his group and of course who wouldn't want to learn from the best!

My project will mainly focus on the development of metabolic biosensors for the BBB through spatiotemporal mechanisms under the MetMap3D project. This is essential for understanding, identifying, and eventually treating neurodegenerative diseases.

Following this experience, I hope to use it to establish a startup or find opportunities in the same area to continue the research within industry. I have a passion for bringing these devices to life so that they can be equally accessible to the world.

When I'm not in the lab, I enjoy being outdoors, studying French, exercising, and traveling to and exploring new places. In general, I like to get lost in what I do.
